We pay a deposit on every soda can and bottle (ten cents here in Oregon). The cans then can be returned for money. Most grocery stores accept them, for example. Here in Portland, all our other recyclables as well as compost are picked up every week. Garbage is picked up only every other week. We are all encouraged to recycle as much as possible (and I do). When I first moved here, we had to pay a service to take recyclables, but that was 1980. It was only a few years later the city began to pick them up at the curb.
